Only an hour from London & 20 mins from Brighton, Tilton House is set in six acres of grounds with mature trees, a tennis court and a fire-pit for stargazing. In addition, there is sumptuous accomodation for 16 and delicious vegetarian food with an international flavour. It’s an idyllic place to retreat to nature.

Accommodation

twinbedsOn retreat, accommodation is in shared rooms, with up to three single supplements also available. Tilton House has shared bedrooms, two with en-suites, with an additional five bathrooms available for use. Rooms can be single, double or triple. All bedrooms, and bathrooms have been decorated with natural materials and have views onto either the South Downs or Sussex Weald. Towels and welcome gift packs are offered. The library is the perfect place to grab a book and sink into the day bed with views through the arched windows or sit next to a wood-burning stove and curl up with an inspiring book.

History

southdownsThis Georgian country house, was once home to economist John Maynard Keynes and his Russian ballerina wife, Lydia Lopokova. Keynes, an economist who’s ideas are the basis for the school of thought known as Keynsian economics, which enjoyed a revival recently due to the plans and thoughts of President Obama and other global leaders. This luminary character was also a keen patron of the arts and co-founded the Arts Council in 1945. He was a key figure in the Bloomsbury Group with Charleston Farmhouse only a short walk down the lane. Lydia was a dancer in Dialgiev’s Ballet Russe, painted by Picasso and is known to have danced naked on the lawns under moonlight.

southdowns2All meals are served with views on to the South Downs. In the warmer months it’s possible to eat in the courtyard surrounded by honeysuckle, roses and geraniums. Or on the sun filled brick terrace by the herb garden. Most meals are catered for by the Secret Restaurant www.thesecretrestaurant.co.uk and is vegetarian , with as much as possible sourced from the vegetable garden. Our chef is creative with dietary requirements.

Activities

studyTilton House is set within 4.5 acres of grounds, and you can lie and star gaze in one of many hammocks or swings found on the grounds. Or play tennis on the all-weather court.

For the more energetic, you can use the tennis court, or take a stroll along one of the flint paths and onto the South Downs, walking for miles, without ever going near a road. Tilton House can supply walking routes from a few hours to a days hike. With suggested spots for picnic stops with views over the Sea. Bicycle hire is also available upon request.

exteriorshotOnly just over an hour from London and set within 4.5 acres of grounds, and nestled directly under the South Downs, Tilton House is the perfect place to explore the new South Downs National Park, towards any of the picturesque villages of Firle, Alciston or Alfriston Most retreats allow for time to explore this gentle and beautiful landscape.
A five minute stroll along a flint track will take you to Charleston Farmhouse, home of the Bloomsbury set, open from April – October.
A ten minute drive will take you to the historic and alternative market town of Lewes, where you will find
some fantastic places to eat and shop.
Just twenty minutes away you can take a dip in the sea at Seaford, or walk or cycle along the Seven Sisters.

Travel

Tilton House is situated within an hour and half of London, by car or train, with direct trains from London Victoria to Berwick, where pick-ups are available.
